No nebula wears its name better: a heart of glowing gas, hundreds of light-years across, beating in the constellation Cassiopeia. Its light set out some 7,500 years ago and is only arriving now. This is the gift for grand declarations, the kind that carry across time.
IC 1805 is a vast emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. Its hydrogen gas, ionized by the hot, massive stars of the open cluster Melotte 15, glows in the deep red of the H-alpha line. Its distance is still debated; the most commonly cited figure is about 7,500 light-years.
